2021 Colour Trends – Let’s Get Painting!

Are you thinking of painting your home? Maybe you’re looking to transform your living room, or add some colour to your new home office?

Changing your wall colour is a great option to instantly change the feel of a room, and can be an inexpensive alternative to fully redecorating. If there’s one thing that designers seem to be agreeing on this year, it’s that the colour trends will be focusing on creating calm, cozy, relaxing environments. This means we are seeing lots of natural earthy hues, from rusty browns, to soothing teals.

Calming Blues and Teals

One of my favourite paint brands, Benjamin Moore, has just released its new 2021 colour trend palette that was designed to radiate warmth and wellbeing. Their colour Aegean Teal 2136-40, has been named colour of the year.

The designers at House & Home recommend trying it in small doses for a pop of colour (like a front door or inside a cabinet) or in larger spaces to create a tranquil oasis.

Rich-Earthy

Rich, earthy colours are also making a big appearance in this years’ colour trends from hues of gold, to burn oranges, and deep reds. Designer Emily Henderson predicts beautiful rich browns are going to be everywhere in furniture and decor. I personally love the warmth and intimacy that Benjamin Moores Amazon Soil Brings to this home office.

Dark Hues

Dark hues when paired with crisp whites and neutral elements are a big hit right now! Interior Designer Kate Lester predicts that “in 2021, we’ll see more people embracing deeper, darker hues”. She also says that “oftentimes people assume that a darker paint colour will make a room feel darker or smaller, but more often than not, it has the exact opposite effect”. That’s something I definitely didn’t know! As per her recommendation, don’t be afraid to add some deep hues to your home, like Sherwin Williams colour of the year, Urbane Bronze.

Whites

Whites are absolutely one of the most popular paint colours, and regardless of what year we are talking about, they are always on-trend. Designer Tiffany Leigh predicts that Chalky Whites will be prominent in 2021. She also tells Good Housekeeping “instead of stark white, think whites with warmer undertones in very matte finishes or even textured finishes, like Roman Clay or Limewash. It’s all about creating a soft, historic, and inviting feel to white walls.”

Like Valspers Promenade, while being white it achieves a warm, cozy, and inviting environment.

Moody Neutrals

“Moody Neutrals” are also seeing some spotlight this year. Interior Designer, Beth Diana Smith predicts seeing “moodier colours in rooms juxtaposed with lighter colors in adjacent rooms. This provides depth, visual interest, and a clear definition of the spaces to make each room feel more special.”

After all, we are all spending a lot of time at home, and creating a clear definition of each room truly makes sense – especially for those of us that are fully working from home. It can be difficult to separate parts of your home, but I can understand why a little bit of paint can go such a long way!

One of my favourite colours in this category is Farrow & Balls Silvery blue. It works perfectly when balanced with lighter colours.

As Farrow & Ball explains, “this silvery blue was so named because it was the lightest blue Farrow & Ball made in its first collection of colours. Light Blue becomes a little more silver in tone when used in shaded areas so is very popular for use on the walls of internal halls, especially when the remainder of the house is painted in cooler, more neutral greys. When used in well lit areas it feels both peaceful and calming, especially when paired with a cool white like Blackened.”
