Adding a touch of Modern Farmhouse

Thinking of adding a touch of modern farmhouse to your home? This year I plan on getting into the real estate market (I’m a first time home buyer & am very excited!), I would love to either look for a home that has touches of this style throughout, or achieve this look myself through renovations.

If you’d like to learn how to incorporate this refreshing style into your home, keep on reading!

First things first, what does a modern farmhouse entail? Abhishek Jain from Barn and Willow explains this style as a combination of the sleek clean lines of contemporary design with a cozy farmhouse aesthetic to create a uniquely fresh take on the country living inspired style. As he further explains, “farmhouse designs are also known for their warmth and simplicity, characterized by natural textures and materials like wood or galvanized steel. While cream is still the color of choice, paired with neutrals, bright, bold hues can also be used.”

I love this design style as it really gives you a chance to add personalized character to your home, whether it’s through wall decor and art, artsy lighting fixtures, colours, and so much more while still maintaining a fresh and cozy environment.

One of my favourite ways to see people bringing the modern farmhouse style into their homes is by the use of Shiplap.

Sheila Bonnell of FRAME Architecture & Design tells Remodelista why she loves using shiplap in her designs. “Shiplap creates texture in such a clean, unfussy way, it can work just as well in a contemporary setting.”

Adding natural elements that would often be found in a traditional farmhouse or barn such as exposed beams and stone fireplaces is another great way to add this style to your home. A friend of mine recently re-did her fireplace and the DIY transformation is unbelievable!

Sliding Barn doors is another great way to bring in the modern farmhouse style. Bonus, they are great for smaller spaces as they take up much less space than traditional doors. The Spruce home decor writer Ashley Knierim loves seeing homes with barn doors because they “ooz vintage charm, a barn door is an easy way to add separation and style to bathrooms, closets, bedrooms and more”.

A modern farmhouse isn’t complete without a farmhouse dining table.

The designers at Mercana recommend styling any solid wood farmhouse table with mismatched chairs to easily achieve the traditional farmhouse look.

I hope these pointers help when it comes to adding a little modern farmhouse style to your home. If you have any further suggestions, leave them in the comments!
