Holiday Decor – Is now the time to start?

When it comes to decorating for the holidays, there seems to be a big debate over when the appropriate time is to begin hanging lights, decorating your tree, and adding your holiday wreaths. If you want my opinion – go for it and get decorating! Keep reading to find inspiration for your holiday home decor and to pin point exactly where you can shop for everything you need this year.

So you’ve decided to get decorating this weekend, but where to start? I like to focus my efforts on my living room first as it’s always the more decor heavy space in the house. This year I will be creating a bit of intrigue going up my stairs into my living room with a simple twinkle light filled garland. If you head to Michaels, you’ll be able to grab a thick garland like the one seen in the image below – and make sure to use these promo codes for your purchase! As for the twinkle lights, I’d recommend a quick Amazon shop if you can’t find a garland with built in lighting.

For your living room, let’s begin with the tree!

I have been reusing my artificial tree for many years and plan to do the same again this year, but if you’re in need of a tree here are some local options:

Once you’ve secured your tree, it’s time to get decorating! You’ll be able to find ornaments just about anywhere – Canadian Tire, Michaels, and Walmart have a huge selection right now (oh and for all of you animal lovers, Pet Smart has a large selection of animal ornaments, I purchased one with the face of a black Labrador that looks like a replica of my dog!). This year I’ll be grabbing a few gorgeous ornaments from Vancouver Christmas Ornaments which include Christmas ornaments commemorating nine of B.C. and Vancouver’s beloved and immediately recognizable landmarks and symbols. These could also make for great stocking stuffers!

Aside from ornaments, if you’re wanting to try something new this year with your tree decor, a little buffalo check ribbon can go a long way in lending a rustic chic vibe to your holiday decor. As Lauren Welch explains for Oprah Daily, you can use a buffalo check ribbon as a garland around your tree, as wreath embellishments, or to fasten presents. You can see more on this at A Pumpkin and a Princess.

Now onto stockings!

I’ve been having a bit of a hard time finding stockings this year. After visiting a few stores, I have decided to resort to Amazon, however you can definitely create DIY stockings if you’re wanting a fun project this weekend. Click here for a tutorial by Alice and Lois on DIY boho stockings – they actually don’t look too difficult to make on your own and they are very trendy!

My last step in my holiday home decor is jazzing up my bedroom with a few festive accents. As Lauren Welch explains, “when you’re focused on getting your tree up and the mantle decorated, it’s easy to overlook other rooms, like the bedroom. But a few simple touches—like a garland on the headboard, a pom-pom wreath, and a big, chunky knit blanket—go a long way to make the space feel extra cozy for the Christmas season.”

And just like that – your holiday home decor is in full swing!
