Declutter, Deep Clean, Organize

After spending most of this past Winter season indoors, we could all use a thorough cleansing of our homes! Now is a great time to declutter and remove anything that no longer serves a purpose in your living room, leaving you with a clean slate to add in Spring decor.

Repainting Walls

For a noticeable change, consider this time of year to repaint the walls in your home to truly reflect the brightness and freshness of Spring. Erika Woelfel, Vice President of Color and Creative Service at Behr Paint Company says, “Spring is the season of new beginnings, and there’s no better time to give your space a new look and feel with a fresh coat of paint.” She also explains that the Spring months offer optimal conditions for indoor or outdoor painting! Based on the Vancouver weather report, I can confirm that indoor or outdoor painting shouldn’t be too much of a problem considering we have 18 degree weather headed our way!

“Incorporating low-maintenance houseplants in your interior decorating is an exceptional way to improve air quality and greet the change of season to spring in your home,” says Jessica Salomone of Philadelphia-based Lotus and Lilac Design Studio. Alternatively, you could simply add some flowers for a touch of freshness. Jane from Jane-athome recommends orchids for their easy care, elegance, and classic beauty. Other Spring flowers to consider are hydrangeas, tulips, and peonies.

Incorporate Pastels

Designed by 2LG Studio, this pastel living room will feel like a warm Spring day no matter what time of year it is. As House Beautiful explains, “the washed wooden floors bring in an unpretentious cottage feel while the crisp white walls and detailed ceiling borders feel perfectly polished.” If you’re looking for a bit more of a Spring pop, I would recommend taking a few pastel tones, and mixing them with accent pieces that have stronger colour palettes.

For example, the pastel blanket and pillows paired with the yellow accent chair provide just the right amount of colour and relaxation to the room!

Maximize Daylight

It’s time to let that beautiful sunshine and cool breeze into our homes! As Jane says, replacing heavy or dark curtains with white or lighter-colored versions–or even removing curtains altogether will brighten up the room significantly. I love the look of this living room as the curtains provide a cool flow to the room and really bring you out of the Winter season, and into the lighter, warmer season!

Refresh Your Fireplace

Last on my list of recommendations is to clear out your fireplace and replace the logs with something lighter to match the Spring season. As designer Salomone explains, “try to remove the winter ashes and add fresh or preserved florals in vases, birch branches, ferns, or stacked books for a fresh perspective.” Although I currently don’t have a fireplace in my home, I would definitely do this if I did!
