Home Office Organization

Over the past two years, many people have transitioned to working from home. If you are one of these individuals, this blog will help provide guidance when it comes to keeping your home office organized in order to increase productivity and give you a sense of ease.

Personally, I have been working from home for the past three years and I always find a noticeable difference in my mood and productivity when my office is organized and clean in comparison to times when it’s in a bit of disarray. As interior designer Charu Gandhi, founder of Elicyon explains, “spaces that are kept clutter-free are calm environments to work in” – I couldn’t agree more!

My first step in organizing my office is by decluttering. Often times I find my office becomes a bit of a storage space for everything from clothes, to amazon boxes, tea cups, candles, Christmas decorations, and so much more. By going through all of the items that don’t belong and taking them back to their homes, my organizational process begins to look like less of a challenge. Next up is organizing and filing any paperwork or documents that you may have laying around. I find my desk becomes a storage space for documents, notebooks, calendars, and sticky notes to name a few. I’d highly recommend investing in storage / organizational boxes or bins so that you can file away your paperwork in a tidy manner – plus should you need to pull these items in the future, you’ll know exactly where they are. I also like to downsize whenever I do this step, by this I mean recycling paperwork that I truly don’t need anymore, or storing away the three or four notebooks I never use and just sticking to one.

Next you’ll want to grab any pens, pencils, staplers, or other office supplies laying around and place them all in a jar (or in a holder if you have one), then give your table and any shelves in your office a good clean. I like to grab a few Lysol wipes to do this however if you have a white desk or cabinets and are finding they need a deeper scrub, grab a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.

Now that the papers are organized, office supplies are cleaned up, and your desk is sparkling, it’s time to assess the cords in the room. This is always my last step which makes the biggest difference. Laptops, monitors, wifi boxes, or anything else with a cord is another point of major disorganization. I recommend keeping cords hidden and out of the way while you work by snaking them behind your desk with cord clips. Last week I re-did this myself and although it seems like such a small or insignificant thing to clean up, it makes a huge difference.

At this point your office should be looking much cleaner and far more organized. Now to keep it like this…that is the true task!
