WEEKEND DIY PROJECT: HOLIDAY WREATH

On the hunt for a fun DIY project this weekend? I recommend making your very own holiday wreath. Here are some tips to get you going!

First off, I suggest heading to Michaels to grab everything you’ll be needing such as a simple non decorated wreath base, a few artificial holiday flowers, artificial berry stems, and any other pieces to add that peak your interest. You’ll also need green wire to attach your pieces together as well as hardwire cutters.

Now that you have purchased everything you need, let’s get to crafting!

Start off by laying out all of the different pieces you’ll be adding to your wreath. If you have bunches of artificial florals cut each one off by the stem and lay them out (you’ll need about 2-3 inches of the stem) – same goes for artificial berries or any other bunched pieces. I like to add my artificial flowers first to get the large pieces onto to wreath as a guide. Make sure your green wire is wrapped securely around both the stem as well as the wreath, we don’t want anything falling off or for the green wire to be sticking out! Next move onto berries or other pieces you have purchased. You can either group pieces together then add them to your wreath or add them one by one. Personally, I like to begin by filling out my wreath one by one, then at the half-way point I begin to bunch them together.

Here is an image of my wreath I made last week:

For those of you who are wanting a more lightweight option, you can use a styrofoam wreath instead. This will be light with a smooth rounded form—ideal for a wreath that you want to cover that will not hold weight on its own. It can be covered with fabric, yarn, and any other material. A few initial steps before adding your decor are:

  1. Spray-paint the form or cover with fabric
  2. Use straight pins to adhere embellishments by pressing a pin through the embellishment into the soft base beneath
  3. Repeat, placing embellishments as close together as you can and using smaller ones on top to fill in gaps (Don’t worry if they are not all flush—this creates dimension.)

And voila – you have your very own personalized wreath! An added touch that I think will really bring the festivities into your home as you do this DIY project is putting your favourite holiday movie on in the background. I hope you enjoy this festive craft!
